The Digestive System or Gastrointestinal tract are terms used synonymously to describe the Alimentary canal, the accessory organs of digestion and the digestive processes which take place at different levels in the canal. The purpose of the Digestive System is to enable the body to carry out the process of digestion which prepares food eaten in the diet for absorption into the bloodstream.
The Alimentary canal begins in the mouth and ends at the anus. In between, it passes through the thorax, abdomen and pelvis. The structure of the Alimentary canal changes as it moves through the body and at these different levels, are adapted for the different steps necessary for the complex processes of food digestion to take place. Digestion is fundamentally dependent on the enzymes which are secreted into the Alimentary tract by the accessory organs.
After absorption, nutrients obtained from food are used by the body in a process called Metabolism. These nutrients provide the raw materials for the manufacture of new cells, hormones and enzymes as well as the energy which every cell needs.
The organs and activities of the digestive System can be divided into four steps:
- Ingestion, when food is taken into the Alimentary canal. Digestion begins with the eyes and nose, the organs through which we can appreciate the appetizing sight and smell of the food
- Digestion which involves the mechanical breaking down of food by the action of the jaws and teeth (mastication) with the salivary glands and the muscles of the oesophagus, stomach, and the Chemical breakdown of food particles by enzymes, through to the duodenum to the small intestine by gravity.
- Absorption, where digested food substances pass through the walls of the large intestine, comprising of the ascendant, transverse and descendant colon, into the capillaries and lymph vessels, to be carried throughout the body.
- Elimination where food substances which cannot be absorbed are excreted by the bowel as through the sigmoid colon and finally, the rectum
Many people for example have, at one point or another, experienced symptoms of indigestion. And in addition, the stress of modem living and poor diets has increased the incidence of conditions such as gastritis, gastric ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Diverticulitis.
